Andic soil on the coffee farm. Its origin is volcanic ash, and it is very fluffy with a low density and good drainage capacity - great for plant root infiltration! Unfortunately the soils are also prone to landslides, as it can liquefy with tremors. Here, a landslide on the farm offered me the opportunity to snap some pictures of the soil. The brown colors are areas rich in organic matter (it looks like organic farming methods might pay off). The red color is (I think) ferrihydrite, though clearly some kind of oxidized iron (i.e. rust).
